Kelp Ring in 14k Gold | (Macrocystis pyrifera)
The undulating waves of kelp blades are recreated in this 14k gold ring. The kelp "leaves" flow around the ring, rising a bit in the front and tightening towards the back for a comfortable fit that won’t snag on clothes or hair. This is one of our more abstract pieces, if you didn’t know it was kelp, it may just feel like the ocean.
This is our first design of a water species and we are excited to do more! We like the movement we were able to achieve with this piece, and we are looking forward to exploring more green marine life.
One caveat though- kelp isn’t actually a plant! It’s an algae, but it does photosynthesize, store carbon, and function much like a plant would by providing habitat and food.

Kelp grows from a holdfast attached to rock and the bottom of the ocean, and with no roots it absorbs nutrients directly from the water. The “bubbles” along the stem are filled with air, and help the plant stretch up vertically instead of getting thrown around by the currents. Kelp helps to shield the coastlines from turbulent waters.

Gold tarnishes very slowly, over years. Whereas silver can tarnish in a matter of months if it isn’t cared for.
We recommend occasionally cleaning this ring with dish soap and an old toothbrush, as dust can get trapped in the wavy recesses. Just make sure to dry any jewelry after washing it. Water that lingers, or keeping your jewelry in a humid room, makes it tarnish much faster.

While it’s hard to answer personal questions of style, we think the abstract nature of this ring lends itself to easily compliment other pieces of jewelry. This ring can be a star, but it also knows how to share the stage.
