Silver Fern Ring in 14k Gold | (Alsophila dealbata)

from $465.00

Ferns are some ancient and unique species in the plant world, and this ring captures a few special qualities of the New Zealand tree fern. Here we feature both the delicate frond and the coiled, intricate spiral of the fiddlehead. This coil unfurls into the lacy fronds that we recognize in ferns. In New Zealand, fiddleheads (called koru by the native Maori) symbolize constant movement that returns to the point of origin. The spiral makes a perfect visual for the idea of going forward and still coming back to where you started.

The asymmetry of this ring moves the eye from the spiral to the frond and around, and the thin back and low profile make it easy to wear.

Notice how everything grows from the top of the fern trees. What looks like a trunk is actually a modified root, a wet, living ecosystem of its own full of moss, lichen, and other plants. This helps them to survive and recover much more quickly after wildfires. Click the picture above to link to more about their role in the forests down under.

Fern Ring FAQs

  • The edge of fern fronds are toothy. We tried to stay true to this detail in the ring, while still making the edge comfortable. We have heard several women come back after purchasing one to express their surprise that the ring doesn’t catch on their clothes or hair.

In sculpting this ring, we smooth the inside edge so that the frond’s “teeth” appear on the surface but are smoother on the inside of the ring.

If you wear it for a few days and want to return it please do so, click here to get a free return shipping label: returns page.

  • The thin back makes this ring very easy to wear, but it is also a point of concern for some. We worked through a couple versions of this ring to adjust the thickness of the stem to be strong and delicate at the same time.

  • Some people like rose gold, some want the brilliance of 18 karats…

We make this ring often enough that we are happy to do it in different metals. Email us at info@shademetals.com and we will respond with an estimate in your desired metal. Please include your ring size in the email.

We generally advise people interested in white gold to go for platinum instead.

Gold is naturally yellow, so to make white gold you need to mix it with a whiter metal. Then the final mix can be rhodium plated to make it even whiter and brighter. Unfortunately rhodium platings need re-applying every few years. Platinum is a whiter metal and does not need any plating.
