Red Poppy Necklace
The seed pods of red poppy flowers look like little vases with umbrella caps on them. In between the vase and the cap there are a bunch of little rectangular holes. Hundreds of tiny tiny seeds spill out and get blown everywhere on the wind. That’s why poppies are so proliferous. Thousands and millions of seeds blowing in the wind.
First I have to fill up these little rectangles with wax so that the shape is solid. To turn this sculpture into silver we have to make a plaster mold, and if the plaster were to seep into the holes the capsule shape would collapse. Once the holes are filled and the pods are cut to the right length I frame them up with the blue wax wire. The final step is to attach the pink sprue channel. This works like the road for the silver to flow into the piece during the casting process.
