Tree Ring Music

Haunting, beautiful, & arhythmic when translated into piano notes.

Instead of a record needle reading the vibrations of sound, Bartholomäus Traubeck wanted to play music he could see.

His machine uses a camera to send data of the thickness, spacing, color, and texture of tree rings to a computer algorithm that translates the visual image into piano notes.

His album, Years contains the stories of spruce, ash, oak, maple, alder, walnut, and beech trees.

Have a listen and tell us what you think.  Is it more beautiful than scary or vice-versa?
